Merestead was the estate of William Sloane and his family. W & J Sloane were furniture purveyors, providing furnishings to the White House, Waldorf Astoria, Metropolitan Opera House, John D. Rockefeller's Kykuit, Washington Irving's Sunnyside and more. The main house at Merestead was designed in 1907 by the renowned architectural firm of Delano & Aldrich, designers of Kykuit, Manhattan's Knickerboker and Union Clubs, among their many other important designs. As younger men working for Carrere & Hastings, they drew the winning design used for the NY Public Library. Delano, on his own, designed the Art Deco style Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport. The Merestead estate features 130 acres of nature trails, gardens, a historic farm complex, numerous outbuildings and more.
